The Kingdom of Morocco played an essential role in protecting the Argan tree from extinction, particularly after it was classified as a ‘BIOSPHERE RESERVE’ and a ‘WORLD HERITAGE SITE’ by UNESCO in 1998. Morocco is home to 20 million Argan trees, which grow in several southern regions of the country, including Agadir, Taroudant, Sidi Ifni, and Chichaoua. This treasure is not found in any other area of the world. The perennial tree is famous for its tremendous ability to resist drought and combat desertification, especially in the Souss region between Essaouira and Tafraout.
“With strong trunks and roots, green branches and leaves, standing tall in the face of harsh, dry climates, and occasionally embracing herds of goats that eat some of its leaves, everyone agrees on the rarity and history of the Argan tree. While biologists differ about its true age, they estimate it to be between 1500 and 2000 years old, making it one of the rarest and oldest trees in Morocco and the world. The United Nations declaration of International Argan Day is international recognition of Morocco’s efforts, under the high patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, to protect and value the Argan tree and develop its vital field. This comes especially after launching an ambitious development program aimed at planting agricultural Argan on an area of 10,000 hectares.
After the great demand for Argan fruits, especially by modern companies that invested millions in machines for converting and extracting oil, its prices jumped very quickly to unprecedented levels. As a result, its monthly production became measured in thousands of liters, most of which were exported abroad.
According to official figures in Morocco, the volume of Argan oil production in 2020 amounted to about 1,400 tons, compared to 400 tons in 2010 and 36 tons in 2002. International cosmetics companies, including the French brands “L’Oreal” and “Chanel,” have entered the global demand line, with France being the first importer of this oil at about 64%. The European Union accounts for 86% of the total Moroccan exports, and these significant companies often sell their products at high prices, taking advantage of the original oil’s good reputation.
Despite attempts to grow the Argan tree in similar environmental circles, it remained faithful to the soil of its original homeland in the Moroccan region of Sous. Moroccan Jews carried its fruits to plant in the Negev desert and Wadi Araba, and other attempts were made in Mexico and California, but the tree, despite its growth, did not give fruits. Morocco remained a monopoly on the production of this tree, which was in great demand globally, resulting in increased pressure on the cultivated areas that are dwindling annually due to difficult climatic conditions, overgrazing, and wood collection, despite several initiatives to expand the scope of its cultivation and protect it from overexploitation.
